Class Update

For the current extensive closure, I will provide learning opportunities on Google Classroom. These will focus on activities to assist students improve as readers and writers. I will provide feedback on completed work to all students. This work will not affect students' grades. If students have any incomplete work from earlier in the quarter (two written assignments), I encourage them to complete this and I will update their grade. Additionally, all students were assigned a project to complete prior to the closure. This required all students to read a novel of their choice and complete a visual response to their reading. Details for this assignment can be found on the Google Classroom page. When we return, students will have an opportunity to work on this in class; however, I strongly encourage all students to make sure they are reading during this time. Please email me any questions or concerns.

Class Overview:

The focus of this year’s Reading Workshops and book clubs is to motivate our students to read and understand the importance of becoming lifelong readers. Our goal is to strengthen comprehension skills. Within the design of the workshop model, which includes direct teacher instruction, group and individual engagement our students will continue to develop strategies that lead to individual growth.

Writing will be an even greater part of the curriculum this year.  Students will identify the structure of the writing, craft their own writings, evaluate and edit, write responses and essays.  Types of writing we explore are narrative, fiction, non-fiction, persuasive, descriptive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and research.

Google Classroom / Class Notebook:

We will be using Google Classroom this year. Google Classroom allows me to create and collect assignments paperlessly. Students can keep track of what's due on the Assignments page and begin working with a click. Students should login with your Stonewall Middle School Google Apps account.  To access Google Classroom, visit:
